This music served as a reminder to people in the great depression that even though times were tough for everyone, there was still a chance for it to get better. This optimism was key in keeping the country together as radio music became ever-so more popular among people. The centripetal force of music permitted many Americans to keep on pushing through the difficult times they faced, much like that of Joads in their struggle for a better life.

Like the Joads, these senior American citizens went through a time of hardships and struggles due to a lack of jobs in the American economy at the time. This gives us insight on the Joads' struggles because we get to hear the story of other people who went through the same thing, which helps keep the issue in our mind of how difficult life was in that time period because the struggles of those who went through this crisis are portrayed in a very influential and emotionally charged way.
